An Overview of Recent EV Batteries Guidelines

A recent change that has taken place in the world of EV lithium-ion batteries is that the government has released new guidelines for the testing of EV batteries. These guidelines are designed to ensure that batteries are safe and reliable. These guidelines result from extensive research and input from field experts, providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of EV battery technology.

What is it all about?

The road transport ministry's draft of the standards is based on recommendations of a committee that examined EV batteries after cases of vehicles catching fire. They are continuously working to improve the safety and efficiency of EV batteries, and these guidelines are an essential step in that effort.

These amendments include additional safety requirements related to battery cells, battery management systems, onboard chargers, battery pack design, thermal propagation due to internal cell short circuits leading to fire, etc. We can help prevent future accidents and keep drivers and passengers safe by ensuring that these safety requirements are met.

All about changes:

l  The Indian government has amended two of its standards for electric vehicle batteries. The first amendment is to AIS 156, which deals with the safety of batteries. The second amendment is to AIS 038 Rev. 2, which deals with the performance and testing of batteries.

l  The changes to AIS 156 are designed to improve the safety of batteries and include requirements for better labelling and identification of batteries, as well as stricter testing and inspection procedures. The changes to AIS 038 Rev. 2 are designed to improve the performance of batteries and include requirements for better tracking of battery performance, as well as stricter testing and inspection procedures.

These amendments include additional safety requirements related to

l  battery cells,

l  BMS,

l  Onboard charger,

l  Design of battery pack,

l  And thermal propagation due to inner/ internal cell short circuits resulting into a fire.

The impact of the guidelines on an average EV battery packs supplier and manufacturer:

The new EV batteries guidelines by the road transport ministry are going to have a significant impact on manufacturers. These new guidelines will force manufacturers to re-evaluate their current battery technology and make significant improvements.

Cost of these new batteries will likely increase, which will be passed on to consumers? However, the increased safety and other measures that manufacturers need to employ will make EVs more attractive to consumers and are expected to boost sales.
